A pleasure to work with Lee and the team at Organic Roofs on our helicopter hangar project. The concept of building the structure into the hillside was a journey of discovery for the whole team and their unique approach to the project was perfectly executed against a very challenging timetable and sequence with other trades. The final results speak for themselves.

Organic Roofs’ approach
Install
We worked with steel frame designers Fordingbridge on this buried helicopter hangar in the Chilterns. We used a combination of two types of single ply waterproofing systems (both supplied by CCM) to achieve a watertight finish, comprising:
After construction, the earth from the meadow behind was levelled down to backfill the hangar, with storey-height gabions deployed by the main contractor to retain the ground around the landing area.
Planting
After the backfill was complete, the grazing meadow above was allowed to naturally recolonise, which enabled the building to fully blend into the hillside – leaving only the impressive awning and landing pad visible.
