We recommend a care package for the plants be put in place, in line with the national GRO Guidelines.
Considerations and costs
While we design and install every roof to thrive year after year, a big part of ensuring that happens is to undertake a visual inspection and perform some simple tasks once or twice a year. For sedum roofs, Spring is the best time to visit whereas for meadow roofs late Summer is the optimum time. Summarising each visit, we offer a report detailing the plant and insect life on your roof, its overall condition and recommendations for future care.
- Checking substrate levels meet GRO guidelines
- Cut/no-cut biomass management
- Visual inspection of roof for cracks and other problems
- Maintenance – clearing blocked outlets
- Invasive plants can make sedum roofs appear scruffy
- Inspecting and auditing flora and forna
- Checking sedum quality
- Moss maintenance drainage
Qualified personnel
Maintenance, where conducted by qualified personnel, will ensure the initial establishment and continued health of the green roof system. Our teams have expertise in both roofing and green roof ecology, so our maintenance contracts ensure peace of mind not just in terms of the plants but of your roof as whole. Our staff are knowledgable about UK native meadow and sedum planting so can help maintain the plant communities as they evolve, but are also experienced roofers that are on hand to spot and rectify issues as they occur.
Green roof care offers that chance to take a ‘stitch in time saves nine’ approach to your property: investing in skilled green roof maintenance can help catch problems with loose or broken tiles, cracked pipes or render for example, before they become more serious, potentially saving thousands on more substantial interventions.
And sedum roofs, while often promoted as low-maintenance, can appear much more unkempt much more quickly with windblown invasives looking much more prominent than they do on a meadow roof.
Additional support
We also provide a reactive maintenance service for problems with existing roofs whether green or installed by others companies.
Lee and his team are extremely knowledgeable and easily sorted out the revival of our sedum roof installed by others. The Maintenance Report they produced was very useful and we will be using them again to care for our green roof next year.Lynda, Roedean

Fertilisation
Generally not required on biodiverse roofs, particularly where indigenous species are being encouraged to replicate native habitats. Whilst a low vegetative density is common, zero vegetation is generally undesirable.
Plant Management
A maintenance programme should be drawn up to follow the biodiversity design, ensuring that no materials are removed from the roof that may adversely a ect the biodiversity potential of the roof.
